Autism Can Be Part of Your Life Without Becoming All of It.

But before we talk about your child… how are YOU?

I’m Tanyika.

I wanted someone to ask, How are YOU? That was the question I needed someone to ask me more often.

Not:

What did the school say?
What therapy are you trying?
What behavior are you working on?
What does your child need next?

How are YOU doing with all of this?

Because autism parenting can become so child-centered that the mother disappears.

And I believe you matter on this journey too.

If you’ve looked up and realized autism has taken up so much space that you can barely see yourself anymore, I understand.

I’ve been there.

Getting more of me back didn’t happen all at once.

It happened one decision, one boundary, one routine, and one intentional step at a time.

You don’t have to disappear to support your child.

Three ways to put you first.

The First Domino...Waiting

Me Over Autism™

If autism has taken up so much space that you barely recognize yourself anymore, I understand.

I’ve been there.

I didn’t get more of myself back overnight. I did it through intentional choices one boundary, one routine, one decision, one step at a time.

And I learned something along the way:

Loving your child deeply does not require losing yourself.

You can support your child and make room for the woman you still are.

NICE TO MEET YOU

Meet Tanyika Mayhew Butler: Autism Mom + Educator

I created Me Over the Autism Diagnosis because no one was asking about me.

Everybody wanted to know what Kendall needed, what the school was doing, what therapy we were trying, or what behavior we were working on. Very few people were asking, “How are YOU doing?” Somewhere along the way, I realized that I mattered on this journey too.

I’m Tanyika, and my daughter Kendall is now 25. For almost thirty years, I’ve supported families, advocated for children, and helped professionals better understand autism. I spent 27 years working in education, mostly as a school counselor, before I retired. Still, my greatest understanding didn’t come from training. It came from living this journey myself.

Our journey has involved limited communication, intellectual disability, ADHD, severe anxiety, aggression, tough transitions, and four years in an intensive behavior program. So when I talk about getting more of yourself back, I’m not coming from an easy place. I’m sharing what I’ve lived through.

Early on, I realized I could be there for Kendall without letting autism take over my whole life. I kept growing in my career and made sure to find places where I could lead, contribute, and just be myself. Over the years, I took on different leadership roles and was honored as Middle School Counselor of the Year, Writer of the Year, and received the Radiance Award, which recognized the counselor in my district who best represented the profession. These experiences were important because they reminded me I was still a mother, wife, professional, leader, and a woman with my own gifts and goals.

Looking back, I see that I got parts of myself back by taking small, intentional steps. Sometimes that meant making space for myself on purpose. Other times, it happened as Kendall became more independent. As she learned to wait, handle “not yet,” adjust to changes, follow routines, and do more on her own, she needed me a little less. I realized something important: every bit of independence Kendall gained also gave me more space in my own life.

More room to be a wife. More room to lead. More room for conversations that weren’t about autism. More space for my own interests, relationships, plans, and happiness. More room to just be myself.

That’s why I focus on parents first in my work. Of course, we can talk about your child and ways to make daily life easier. But we’ll also talk about you: how this journey has changed you, what you’ve gotten used to, what you’ve stopped doing, what you miss, what you want to get back, and how you can start making more space for yourself again.

Supporting your child shouldn’t mean losing yourself behind the diagnosis. You matter on this journey too.

I Need to Find Space for Myself

I created the kind of support I wish someone had offered me: a space where the autism journey matters, but YOU do too.

You do not have to disappear in order to be a good autism mom. You matter on this journey too.
