2015: The Applause Was Real

 

In 2015, I received a district-level School Counselor Award...The Radiance Award.

From the outside, it looked like the exact moment you’re supposed to hold onto.
The accolades were coming.
Visibility was strong.
Expectations were clear.

But shortly after that award, I uncommitted from two leadership roles.

On paper, it didn’t make sense.
But alignment was gone.

What I understand now—and what many high performers learn too late—is this:
applause can be persuasive, especially when it’s attached to success you’ve already outgrown.

I didn’t wait for permission to change.
I trusted clarity over what was familiar.

That decision mattered more than I could see at the time.

Because two years later—when life intensified in ways no résumé prepares you for—I wasn’t trapped inside leadership roles I had already outgrown. I wasn’t managing or carrying commitments that would have required me to push through at all costs, where mistakes have consequences.

I had already made the pivot.

That experience shaped the work I do now.
