When her daughter Kendall entered kindergarten, Tanyika found her skipping through the hallway in a Cinderella dress, with no shoes on and several adults following behind her. That moment reinforced an important lesson: behavior is communication, and confident responses begin with understanding what a student may be trying to express.
Kendall’s needs eventually required four years in an intensive behavior program. Tanyika and her family entered the program with hesitation and trepidation, only to discover a supportive environment that helped Kendall make meaningful progress and taught them the power of skilled, consistent responses.
As a longtime school counselor who has supported educators, students, and families, Tanyika understands how school systems work.
