I had finally reached a season of my career I had dreamed about for years.
I loved my career.
I loved making a difference.
But somewhere along the way, the wins stopped feeling the same.
It didn't make sense.
For years, I had worked incredibly hard to earn a seat at tables I once dreamed of joining. I had said yes to leadership, professional associations, executive boards, and opportunities that stretched and challenged me. I even imagined one day serving as president of my professional association.
This was the season I had worked for.
From the outside, I had everything I had once hoped to achieve.
But standing on that mountaintop, something felt different.
I was proud of what I had accomplished.
I still loved my career.
But I no longer loved the way I was succeeding.
That realization terrified me.
Somewhere along the journey, the good tired , just became tired...
Walking away from those leadership roles felt irresponsible. It felt like setting my résumé on fire after spending years building it. Who works that hard to earn a seat at the table...only to choose not to stay?
I couldn't explain what I was feeling.
I only knew I was exhausted.
Like so many high achievers, I assumed the answer was burnout.
So I did what people told me to do. I stepped away from nearly every executive board and leadership role I held, keeping only one. I thought I was taking a break.
What I didn't realize was that I was beginning an investigation.
Over the next ten years, I wasn't trying to create a framework.
I was trying to answer a question my own life kept asking.
Why did the wins no longer feel the way they once had?
As I looked back over my life, I realized something I had never had language for.
The promotions were real.
The awards were real.
The impact was real.
The success was real.
But many of those victories had quietly been built on habits, commitments, and expectations that had become too expensive to repeat and did not feel the same.
Those weren't failures.
They were UGLY Wins™.
That's why I wrote this book.
Not to tell you to quit your career.
Not to convince you to reinvent yourself.
Not to encourage you to dream smaller.
I wrote it because I believe many successful people don't need a new life.
They need to EDIT the version of success they created decades ago.
If you've spent the last ten years wondering why your wins don't feel the way they once did...
If you've confused exhaustion with the price of success...
If you've ever looked at a life you've worked incredibly hard to build and quietly wondered, "Why doesn't this feel the way I thought it would?"
...then this book is for you.
Because the goal was never just to reach the mountaintop.
It was to build a life that allows you to stay there, love where you've arrived, and still feel energized by the wins you've worked so hard to achieve.
"This isn't a book about doing less. It's a book about succeeding differently."
This book is for you if you've ever found yourself asking...
Â
Have you ever wondered...
-
When did my good tired become just tired?
-
Why don't my wins feel the way they did ten years ago?
-
What have I accepted as "normal" simply because it helped me keep succeeding?

About the Author
After nearly three decades in education, Tanyika Mayhew Butler thought she understood success.
She had built a meaningful career, written her first book, A Krusade for Kendall, been recognized for her leadership, and spent the last three years consulting with school districts, organizations, and families to create better outcomes for autistic individuals.
From the outside, it looked like she had achieved exactly what she had worked so hard to build.
Then she discovered something she couldn't ignore.
She realized that many of her greatest accomplishments and the accomplishments of countless leaders, educators, caregivers, and high achievers she served had come through patterns that were quietly becoming too expensive to repeat.
Once she saw it, she couldn't unsee it.
And she couldn't keep it to herself.
That's why she wrote UGLY Wins™.
Today, Tanyika challenges the belief that exhaustion is simply the price of excellence. Through her speaking, writing, and consulting, she helps high-achieving adults 40+ recognize the hidden cost of success and build a life where excellence is not only possible but sustainable.
Because she believes one simple truth:
Success should not require recovery.
Tanyika lives in the Atlanta area with her husband, Richard, and is the proud mother of two adult children. Her daughter Kendall's journey continues to inspire her life's work and remind her daily that some of the most meaningful victories aren't the loudest they're the ones we can sustain.
UGLY Wins™ will officially release on September 26, 2026
UGLY Wins™ will officially release on September 26, 2026, the first anniversary of my mother's passing.
Rather than allowing that date to be remembered only for loss, I've chosen to let it also represent legacy.
This book is dedicated to the woman who taught me that our greatest impact isn't found in what we accumulate, but in what we leave behind.
